When it starts getting dark earlier and the days get cooler, I love making small changes to my living room to make it more inviting and cozy in the colder months.
There is a point though, when decor becomes clutter. Add that to regular clutter (laptop, magazines, dog toys, etc.) and it starts to weigh on me. When that happens, straightening up just isn’t enough. Want a fast way to feel better about your home? You can enjoy a refreshed space and here is how to do it.
SUBTRACT
The easiest way to get started is to remove all the clutter. For example: Magazines and papers, extra cords, and chargers, gaming equipment, etc.
Next remove all the knick-knacks, pillows and decor - even plants. Myquillen Smith in her book The Cozy Minimalist calls this quieting the room. Find a corner nearby, but not in the same room, to pile things until you decide if they will go back into the room.

3. Shop your own home for the missing pieces. Especially good finds are pairs of things. Symmetry creates peace and order and is good for the soul, so that’s always a win. You may have one lamp in the living room and find its mate in a bedroom, for example. If you can’t find a twin of something, look for something similar size and shape.
4. Bring back into the room only what you love. Marie Kondo would have you hold an item and ask, “Does this spark joy?”
5. This leaves holes in the room Don’t just fill them in with “good enough”. Do some research about what you need and what will look good in that spot. Take photos of those places to take shopping with you. Create a mood board (of the good elements and inspiration images to keep you on track when you shop for items for that space.
